On Monday afternoon 29 March at 2 pm the public sale of the collection called ‘Soviet Stars Collection’ will take place. This collection is composed of 17 Topazes and 1 Beryl.
These gems were mined in Russia in the Ural Mountains. During the Soviet Union they were cut in the early seventies. The Soviet Union government decided to show around the world that they could produce an exceptional unique collection of gems to represent the Russian pride.
Thanks to the gems huge sizes, the cutters selected for their expertise and craftsmanship, could permit themselves to lose more than 50% of rough in order to create different original shapes (petal, diamond, egg, pear, leaf and tear) in a perfect cut.
One topaz could take several months and even more than one year to be completely finished and special cutting instruments had to be build because of their sizes. At the present time no mines produce these large rough topazes any more. The cutting factory has been closed since a number of years.
The Soviet Stars Collection is exceptional in shape, colour, cut, brilliance, purity and size (weight from 225,11 carats to 2.411 carats).
The gems will be sold under supervision of the curator.
